ECU Remapping in Kirkby Mallory, Leicester
At Mallory Performance, every remap starts from scratch. We offer a full range of ECU remapping services from our facility in Kirkby Mallory, near Leicester, covering everything from cost-effective off-dyno remaps to fully bespoke on-dyno custom tunes. Each one is written live on the car by our in-house tuner, on our Maha 4WD MSR 500 dyno. The vast majority of remap shops send you away with a bought-in, off-the-shelf map. We don’t.
That’s why Mat Armstrong, one of the UK’s most-followed automotive content creators, brings his cars to us. When the map has to be right, a generic file won’t do.
Our dyno facility represents a £250,000 investment and remains the premier setup of its kind in the UK. It’s equipped with a road-simulation fan system that replicates the airflow your engine sees on the road, so the gains we measure on the dyno are the gains you actually feel when you drive away.
Your car’s ECU (Engine Control Unit) manages how your engine runs. It controls fuel delivery, ignition timing, boost pressure, and a range of other parameters, and from the factory, those settings are deliberately conservative. Manufacturers tune for the global market, accounting for varying fuel quality, servicing habits, and a wide range of operating conditions. That caution leaves performance on the table.
A remap adjusts those parameters to better suit your specific car, the fuel available in the UK, and how you actually drive. The result, done properly, is more usable power and torque, better throttle response, and in many cases improved fuel efficiency. The gains available depend on the engine and what modifications are already in place, but turbocharged engines in particular often have significant headroom that the factory map never touches.
The remapping industry has a problem. The majority of what gets sold as a “custom remap” is a generic map file, built for a class of engine rather than a specific car, applied remotely or over the OBD port. That approach can deliver gains, but it can’t account for the variations between individual engines, the condition of your car, or how it actually behaves under load.
A genuinely bespoke map is built differently. Your car runs on the dyno, the tuner watches what the engine is doing in real time, and the map is adjusted until the numbers and the feel are right. That’s what we do here, and it’s what separates an on-dyno custom remap from everything else on the market.
We invested £250,000 in building a dyno cell that produces maps worth having. At the centre of it is a Maha 4WD MSR 500 rolling road, equipped with a road-simulation fan system engineered to replicate the airflow conditions your engine experiences on a real road. Most dyno facilities use standard industrial fans. Ours doesn’t, because the difference in how an engine breathes under those two conditions is reflected in the map that comes out of it.
Every tune is written by our in-house tuner, on-site, on your car. Full details of the facility are on our dyno cell and tuning facility page.
Mat Armstrong builds and drives some of the most talked-about project cars in the UK, with millions of subscribers watching every stage of every build. He chooses Mallory Performance for his ECU remaps. That’s not a casual endorsement – when your map is going to be scrutinised by an audience that knows cars, it has to be right.
We offer four remapping options alongside our gearbox remap and back-to-stock service. A brief overview is below, with full details on each dedicated service page.
Off-dyno remaps are a cost-effective way to unlock genuine gains without the full dyno process. We offer Stage 1 and Stage 2 options, the latter requiring supporting hardware upgrades which we can supply and fit.
Our on-dyno custom remaps are built live on the Maha dyno, written specifically for your car. Stage 1 suits most road cars looking for the best possible result. Stage 2 is aimed at vehicles with upgraded hardware and the appetite for a more substantial tune.
We also offer a mobile remapping service across Leicestershire, for customers who can’t make it to us in Kirkby Mallory.
ECU remapping modifies the software that controls your engine. Manufacturers set parameters like fuel delivery, ignition timing, and boost pressure conservatively to account for global markets and varying conditions. A remap adjusts those settings for your car and how you drive it, releasing performance that’s already built in but being held back by the factory calibration.
A properly written remap on a healthy engine carries very little risk. The problems in this industry come from poor-quality maps, whether that’s a generic file not written for your specific car, or a tune that pushes beyond what the hardware can safely handle. At Mallory Performance, every map is written live on your car by our in-house tuner, who adjusts in real time based on what your engine is actually doing. That’s a fundamentally different process from a remote, off-the-shelf file.
It depends on your engine and what you’re starting with. Turbocharged petrol and diesel engines typically see the largest gains because there’s more headroom in the factory map. A Stage 1 remap on a turbocharged diesel can realistically deliver improvements of 20 to 30 percent in power and torque. Naturally aspirated engines tend to see more modest results. Use our ECU remapping and gains checker for a picture of what’s achievable on your specific car.
An off-dyno remap uses established data for your engine type and delivers real gains without the car needing to run on a rolling road. An on-dyno remap goes further. Your car runs on our Maha 4WD MSR 500 dyno and the map is built around what your specific engine is doing in real time, refined until it’s right. The result is a tune that’s unique to your car rather than based on similar models.
Remapping is legal in the UK. If your car is used on public roads, any remap must not cause it to fail emissions standards. You’re also required to inform your insurance provider of any modifications, including remaps. We’d always recommend checking with your insurer before booking.
A remap will typically affect your manufacturer warranty on powertrain components if the dealer can detect it, and many manufacturers can identify remaps during diagnostics. If your car is still under manufacturer warranty, it’s worth factoring this in. Our back-to-stock service can return your ECU to its original software if needed.
Most modern cars with an ECU can be remapped. The gains available and the methods used vary depending on the make, model, and engine. Use our gains checker to see what’s possible for your car, or get in touch and we’ll give you a straight answer.
